MUSC 222 (Stage Musicals)

Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 3:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

MUSC 222 (Stage Musicals) is offered every spring. A required course for musical theater majors at SUNY Geneseo, MUSC 222 is open to all students regardless of major. In fact, it is popular among students looking to fulfill one of their Fine Arts General Education requirements. MUSC 222 does NOT require students’ ability to read music notation. Instead, the course centers on the history and development of the American musical, challenging students to think critically about how the American musical has contributed to ideas about American national identity. Students in this course examine how factors such as race, gender, and class have been and continue to be negotiated on the American musical theater stage.
On Tuesday, August 4, we'll examine the musical Rent in the context of the United States in the 1990s.
