This class session asks: how can philosophical tools of reasoning
and argument help us better understand the concept of white privilege--and
socio-political privilege more generally--as well as the often contentious public
discourse around white privilege? We will draw on the classic paper by Peggy
McIntosh "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," recent
philosophical work on the notion of privilege, and our own experiences talking
about the idea of white privilege in everyday life.
